Project Kala Uday has been envisioned to completely renovate and revamp BLKM so that it can upgrade its infrastructure facilities, provide high quality sound and light equipment to artists and performances, and most of all deliver a rich, comfortable and tourist friendly experience to all visitors.
As per Project Kala Uday, it is proposed to expand the size of the museum from its present size of approx. 4,000 square feet currently to almost 10,000 square feet with improved lighting, smooth movement of visitors, greater open spaces to provide a friendly ambience as well as provide space to expand the present number of displayed items.
The last three-year average of visitors to the museum was 1,65,000. We estimate a minimum 20% annual growth in the number of visitors. This will make the project financially viable, besides providing exposure to our folk-art collection to greater number of people and also add to employment.
The Puppet Theatre was inaugurated in 1985 with a seating capacity of 214. Under the Kala Uday project, it is proposed to completely revamp the same by expanding the seating capacity to around 280, install the latest light and sound systems, provide proper green rooms and toilet facilities and provide for a café connected thereto.
With hugely improved facilities and higher number of seats we propose to hold four shows a day, and given the contents of our programme, we are confident that it would be a huge success. This again would need hiring of more performing artists, greater number of visitors, and substantial additional revenue generation.
Many of the activities such as folk music and dance training, puppet making and puppetry training are constrained due to lack of space.
Similarly, the provision for library, research, and an audio video studio is proposed to be enlarged and appropriately enlarged to give impetus to these activities.
This provides for ground seating capacity of about 4,000 people and was constructed about 50 years ago. There is no other location of such dimensions within the city of Udaipur. Time has come to completely revamp this theatre, and in keeping with the times, provide chair seating, and a retractable roof. This would make its use year-round including the hot summer months and monsoon.
It is proposed to add a fine dining restaurant and a cafeteria where the visitors can relax both in a tree shaded open areas and indoors and enjoy the ambience. This facility will facilitate informal intellectual discussions amongst local and outside artists and academics.
